New figures from Gingerbread on single parents and recession

Gingerbread has warned that single parents have continued to move into work in the past year but the recession is hitting their families hard. Fuel and food cost increase, and as working hours and child maintence payments are cut. New figures commissioned by the charity show slightly higher single parent employment rate is limited to those with older children and is not consistent across the country.

New research from CLS on employment and childrearing

Recent paper from the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) examines a continuing concern, that the combination of maternal employment, and hence non-parental responsibility for young children, must be at the expense of child welfare and development.The paper finds that there is very little evidence for a negative impact of mothers' employment on these British children, and only one significant negative estimate in the US sample.

New help for children in the care system

Minister Delyth Morgan has announced a package of measures to help put the focus clearly on the child in the care system. The Minister has also written to local authorities to look at ways to bolster support for foster carers.

Family Nurse Partnership: improving outcomes for vulnerable families

Independent research has recently found that young first time mothers are being helped to improve the life chances of their babies and that fathers are more involved in early years of their children lives due to the Family Nurse Partnership.

New powers help victims break cycle of domestic violence

A new government proposals suggests that violent partners will be banned from thier homes and their victims given support to escape abuse. The police will be able to issue domestic violence protection orders, known as 'Go' orders, to bar the perpetrators of domestic violence from thier homes for up to a fornight, giving thier victims breathing space to consider their options.

Children, Schools and Families Minister: Piloting innovating support for separated parents

Minister Vernon Coaker has announced ten successful pilot areas looking at how local services can be better coordinated for separating and separated parents. The projects aim to improve the wellbeing of families currently going through divorce and separation with help from local services including counselling, mediation and practical and legal support.

Support for children with special educational needs and disablities to help tackle bullying in school

Minister Vernon Coaker has lauched a DVD and a new resource pack for pupils to help prevent and tackle the bullying of pupils with Special Educational Needs and disablities.The DVD is aimed at raising awareness of peers with Special Educational Needs and disablities and to indicate how bullying may effect their lives. The pack has recently been launched around primary schools in  London.

New research from ISER on the recession

The recent increase in the number of people out of work during the recession will effect ethic minority groups, young adults and those with poor educational qualifications. These have been the predicitions from the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex. According to ISER, the unemployment rates has already doubled and it is likely to get worse before it gets better.

Unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections

New research conducted by fpa has found that, alcohol is commonly seen as a factor in not using a condoms with a new partner. The charity wants to encourage, the puplic's recognition that alcohol can and does influence sexual decision making.

New research from JRF: Understanding fathering: masculinity, diversity and change

New research from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation sets out to investigate the parenting beliefs and practices of fathers. The study examines four ethic groups, White British, Black African, Black Caribbean and Pakistani. More similarities than differences were found in father's behaviours, attitudes and aspirations and the challenges they face.

Employment support for carers, publication of new research findings

New research from the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) on employment support which enables carers to combine work and caring successfully has been published. Long-term caring had the most adverse impact on carers' physical, emotional and financial health with dementia caring having the most significant impact.

Health and public professionals to help improve health services for victims of domestic violence

Health and public sector professionals are being asked for their views on how the NHS can improve its services for women and girls who have been victims and sexual assault, Health Minister Ann Keen annouced today. The taskforce on the health aspects of violence against women and girls is holding a month long in a listening exercise to collect feedback from health and other public sector professionals.

Research among people aged between 10-24 years of age has found that road traffic accidents, complications during pregnancy and child birth, suicide, violence, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) are the major causes of mortality. There are more young people in the world today than ever before,1.8 billion.

Evaluation of Incredible Years

Research from Bangor University has followed up a randomized controlled trial of the Incredible Years BASIC parenting programme at 12 and 18 months and found that significant gains identified at 6 months were also maintained at 18 months.

Home Office announces female couples will have same rights registering the birth of a child

The Home Office has announced that from September 1st female civil partners who use fertility treatment to conceive a child will be treated in the same way as married couples, with both female parents' names able to be included on the birth certificate.
