Research on mental health services for mothers

A new research report from Ulster University has found that a suicide is the cause of death among a small but significant number of new mothers. The researchers will call for increased mental health support for new mothers at in international conference on suicide prevention.

National Statistics release provisional divorce rate for 2006

National Statistics has released provisional divorce rate statistics for 2006 indicating that the rate has reached its lowest level since 1984, falling to 12.2 divorces per thousand married men and women.

New research from the Curriculum, Evaluation and Management Centre at Durham University suggests that despite the overhaul of the early years education system there has been no significant improvement in cognitive development in primary school age children.

Addaction survey finds teen alcohol and drug abuse a major factor in family breakdown

Drug and alcohol abuse charity, Addaction has published a survey of a group of families where children have been receiving treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. For more than one in three of those families drug and alcohol abuse were cited as a major cause of family breakdown.

New research from Fragile Families study on fathering and mental health

The Fragile Families Child Wellbeing Study has released new findings using longitudinal data, showing that continuously married fathers (married before the birth of their child and not separating during the study period) have better self-reported mental and physical health than fathers in other family structures, with these differences remaining stable over time.

New research shows neglected girls are more likely to self-harm

New research by clinical psychologist Adina Rusu at Royal Holloway, University of London has found that young women whose mothers have them little response when they were distressed or neglected them as children, are more likely to self-harm.

New survey by FPA on talking about using condoms

A new survey by the Family Planning Association (FPA) for Sexual Health week shows that talking about using condoms with a new partner is difficult, with 70% of those suveyed saying they found the conversation embarrassing.

Statistics on life satisfaction

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has released statistics on life satisfaction, 73% of people in England rated their satisfaction with life as 7 or more out of 10 according to preliminary results from the survey of behaviours and attitudes.
