Divorces fell slightly in 2004 in England and Wales

Divorces fell by 0.1 percent in England and Wales in 2004, according to new statistics released by the Office for National Statistics. This represents the first decrease in the number of divorces in England and Wales since 2000; however, divorces in the UK as a whole increased slightly in 2004. Other findings of the study include the increase of the average age at divorce for men and women, lengthier marriages before divorce as well as the fact that men and women in their late 20s had the highest divorce rates.

One in ten children has a mental disorder

According to new survey by the Office for national Statistics, in 2004 one in ten children had a clinically recognizable mental disorder. It appears that the prevalence of mental disorders was grater among children of certain family types, such a lone parent families, reconstituted families and those whose parents were unemployed, had no educational qualifications or those living in deprived areas. The survey also shows that social support is important for children's mental health.

Thumbs up for Child Trust Funds, but 18-year-olds urge controls on how money is spent

New research funded by the ESRC and led by Professor Andrew Gamble of the University of Sheffield shows that despite great support for the Child Trust Fund by political parties, state departments, think tanks and pressure groups, 18 year-olds want to see greater restrictions one how the money is eventually spent.

Young Carers are Hidden Heroes says new research

New research "our hidden heroes" produced by NCH, the children's charity, and British Gas has revealed that 50% of young carers who responded, are spending over 20 hours a week caring for a sick or disabled relative. Moreover, 65% of those will be caring 7 days a week for loved ones.

Parents' Week 2005 listens to the Real Stories

The sixth national Parents' Week runs from Wednesday 19 October to Wednesday 26 October 2005 and this year has the theme Real Stories. It involves hundreds of support organisations around the UK, which use the week to highlight their own work with families and bring attention to their issues and needs.

Children's charities condemn decisions to 'name and shame' children given ASBOs

Leading children's charities have today criticised the 'naming and shaming' of children placed on Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs), branding the tactic as counterproductive and having the potential to place children at risk of serious harm.

ViSOR will help protect children says NCH

NCH, the children's charity, welcomes the introduction of the Violent and Sex Offender Resister (ViSOR) The new computer system allows police forces across the UK to share information on the country's most dangerous sex offenders and individuals police are concerned about. This is an important step in ensuring that paedophiles and sex offenders can not escape police scrutiny by moving across county borders within the UK.
