Provocation defence to be abolished

Minister for Women, Harriet Harman, has announced the publication of a new report Women's Changing Lives" charting the progress of the government's priorities for women. The report has come at the same time as an announcement ending the provocation defence in cases of domestic homicide, for example, a husband will be unable to escape a murder charge by blaming his wife for 'provoking' him by her infidelity.

Interim report from CAMHS

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) review has been published. The report shows that although notable improvements have been made in promoting and protecting the psychological health and wellbeing of children and young people, there is still more to be done. The report identifies six main areas for future work.

New research from IPPR into mental health and wellbeing among the over 65s

The Institute for Public Policy Research has published a new study highlighting older peoples mental health and wellbeing. The report found an association between levels of deprivation amongst older people and poor emotional wellbeing. A significant contributing factor to well being amongst older people is living alone. Of those living alone 17% rated themselves as 'always / often lonely', compared to 2% of those living with others.

Marriage visa age raised

The Home Office has announced the that the age for which someone can apply for a marriage visa will increase from 18 to 21. The measure is part of a crackdown on forced marriage.

Capability Review: Delivering the Children's Plan

The Cabinet Office has published a Capability Review on the delivery of the Children's Plan. The review details findings on the Department of Children's Schools and Families performance against three objectives: leadership, strategy and delivery.

DCSF consultation on protecting children from sexual exploitation

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has published draft guidance for the identification and protection of children at risk of sexual exploitation. The guidance was launched by Children's Minister Kevin Brennan and Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker.

New research on Triple P

New research on the Australian Triple P programme has been published in the Journal of Primary Prevention. The research shows that Triple P was able to alleviate accumulated risk factors and some negative parenting practices.

Lord Lester of Herne Hill QC to intorduce Bill on living together

Resolution, the organisation for Family Lawyers, has announced that Lord Lester of Herne Hill QC will introduce a Bill to address the financial hardship faced by cohabiting couples, carers and siblings who live together. The Bill will be part of a new 'Living Together' campaign launched by Resolution and Lord Lester's Odysseus Trust.

New research on flirting and temptation

New research on temptation has been published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The research shows that men tend to look at their partners more negatively after meeting a single, attractive woman. Women on the other hand, are likelier to strengthen their current relationship after meeting an available, attractive man.

National debate on support for separating families

A national debate entitled Kids in the Middle has been launched to address separation and its impact on families and children. The debate will include a national online survey. The debate is backed by Relate, Families Need Fathers, One Parent Families|Gingerbread and The Fatherhood Institute.

New book published on Governments and Marriage Education Policy

In April 2007 Dr Elizabeth van Acker from Griffith University, Australia, visited One Plus One in order to continue her research on marriage education policy. Her book Governments and Marriage Education Policy has now been published by Palgrave Macmillan. The book compares marriage education policy in the UK, Australia and the USA.

Provisional birth statistics from National Statistics

The Office for National Statistics has published provisional birth statistics for England and Wales 2007. There has been a 3% increase in the number of live births, and fertility rates have increased for all age groups except women under 20.

'Now we are 50' report from NCDS

The Centre for Longitudinal Studies has published a new report detailing the results of the National Child Development Study (NCDS) chronicling the lives of Britons since 1958. Key findings included that "children from separated families do less well on reading and maths tests in school and have more behaviour problems compared with children from families who stay together".

New research on the Family Nurse Partnership

An independent evaluation of the pilot Family Nurse Partnership has been published. Early findings show that enrolment into the programme has been high with 88% of first-time mothers under 20 in the pilot areas signed up.

New report from FPI on the gender pay gap

The Family and Parenting Institute (FPI) has published a new report entitled Listening to Mother addressing the wage loss experienced by women when they become mothers. The report highlights that "typically when a woman becomes a mother her average wage is 67% of a man's and her salary is likely to stay the same for at least a decade".

JRF research into minimum income standard

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has published new research into what level of income people think is needed to afford a socially acceptable standard of living in Britain. The research found that a couple with two children needs £370 per week, a lone parent with one child £210.

Research into STIs and older persons

New research has been published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections entitled Trends in sexually transmitted infections (other than HIV) in older persons: Analysis of data from an enhanced surveillance system. The research found that there has been an increase in the proportion of older persons attending GUM clinics between 1996 and 2003.

Channel 4 seeks couples for documentary

A documentary producer is doing some research for Channel 4 into the first year of marriage. The project seeks to understand what obstacles newlyweds face and what factors are at play in the early stages. They would like to hear from anyone who divorced or separated within the first 12 - 18 months of marriage, who would like to share their opinions on what can go wrong.
