New law to prevent forced marriage

Legislation to protect victims of forced marriage has received Royal Assent. Under the new act the courts will be able to intervene to protect victims or potential victims of forced marriage.

Every Child Matters agenda announced

Ed Balls the new Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families has set out the agenda for improving the lives of children in a speech at an event organised by the National Children's Bureau. Amongst other things the secretary of state announced a consultation to develop a new Children's Plan that will focus on preventative actions, tailored support and the role of families.

Poll from The Children's Society shows family relationship could be under threat

A new poll from The Children's Society shows that family relationships could be under threat as parents struggle with the demands of work, raising concerns about the amount of time they can spend with their families. In the survey 61% of parents said they don't get enough time to spend with their children.

JRF research on poverty and wealth in Britain

New research from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) provides a new analysis of Britain's changing poverty and affluence profile. Amongst other findings the report shows that more households have become poor, but fewer are very poor.

Financial boost for children's helplines from the Department for Children, Schools and Families

A grant of £30 million has been made to the NSPCC to ensure that every child has someone to call on for help and advice. The extra money will be given over the next four years to strengthen its ChildLine Service

New study from National Statistics of the marriage rate finds a return to the long-term trend

A new study in the Summer issue of Population Trends published by the Office for National Statistics, finds that although changes in marriage legislation in 2005 contributed to the lowest ever marriage rates in England and Wales, marriage rates have been falling since 1973 and the 2005 figures appear to be a return to the longer term trend.
