Real Childcare Choice Offered to all Parents - Hughes
Young Peoples and Families Minister, Beverly Hughes, launched today a consultation which takes forward the commitment to a Childcare Bill. The Bill will confirm the vital role of local authorities, with an obligation to work in partnership across all sectors to shape the future provision of childcare and delivery of early year's service, raising quality and improving outcomes for all children and parents.

Children's perspective on believing and belonging
Children's views on religion as well as the part it plays in their lives have been the main focus of new research carried out by the University of East London. The study has been published for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation by the National Children's' Bureau as part of the Understanding Children's lives series. 100 children, aged 9 to 11, took part in the research, which aimed to find out the extent to which religion shapes their identities and how it influences their social and friendship networks.

Children's involvement in family decision making
New research led by Ian Butel, Margaret Robinson and Lesley Scanlan has been published for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation by the National Children's' Bureau as part of the Understanding Children's lives series. The report, entitled Children and decision making, investigates how children in their pre-teens years contribute to everyday decision making in families. A total of 69 children aged between 9 and 11, took part in focus groups, and 48 were interviewed.

Married couple families still the majority focus on families
Despite a decline in the number of married couples in the UK, this family type is still the most popular one making up 7 out of 10 of all families. This finding is part of a new report published by the Office for National Statistics. Focus on Families explores the many dimensions of contemporary families in the UK.

British Mothers have fewer work opportunities and less childcare support than European Mothers
New research led by Lutz Kaiser explores the differing experiences of working mothers in different European countries. The study found that in England, the limited job opportunities for mothers are due not only to the low coverage of childcare facilities but also to the high cost of day care, which is one of the most expensive in Europe.

Who marries whom- and when do they start a family: comparing Britain and Sweden
Even though Swedish couples are older when they move in together than British couples are, Swedish partners have their first child earlier. However, both Swedish and English women are likely to marry someone with similar education level. These are some of the findings of new study led by Seble Worku and Siv Gustafsson, which investigates partner selection as well as the factors that cause a delay in couple formation and first birth amongst Swedish and British couples.
