Care Matters White Paper
Big business will offer children in care private tutors, apprenticeships and management training as part of a package of measures announced by the Education Secretary, Alan Johnson launching the Care Matters White Paper. The package is worth £305m over the next four years.

Report on sex, drugs and young people
The Independent Advisory Group on Sexual Health and HIV has produced a report of the findings from a seminar held to investigate what it is that motivates young people to become sexually active at a young age, why they engage in risky sexual behaviour and what part drugs and alcohol have in this. The report is entitled Sex, drugs, alcohol and young people: a review of the impact drugs and alcohol have on young people's sexual behaviour.

Fathers and the modern family - publication from the EOC
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has produced a publication entitled Fathers and the modern family, warning that a new generation of dads are being held back by society's failure to recognise the importance of fathers. The EOC's analysis of the Millennium Cohort Surveys presents evidence about the links between a father's role and the well being of children.

Review of health visiting
The Department of Health has published an independent review of health visiting and the role of health visitors. The review, led by Ros Lowe, Chair of the Queens Nursing Institute, recommends the strengthening of the role of health visitors to maximise the impact they can have on children and families.

Statistics from the Child Exploitation And Online Protection Centre
Figures from the Child Exploitation And Online Protection Centre (CEOP) show that seventy-six (76) children from across the UK have been rescued from sexual abuse environments by officers working with CEOP during its first 12 months of operation.

Letter to The Times and the Government calling for help for children affected by divorce and separation
A lobby of children's experts including Penny Mansfield, director of One Plus One, have written a joint letter to The Times and to Gordon Brown calling for the Government to protect children and young people from the emotional fallout from divorce and separation: "Today we are calling for the establishment of an interministerial group to spearhead a new cross-departmental approach for families that are separating or have separated. This would bring advice, information and support services together to promote the best outcomes for children and for their parents. The active, positive and safe engagement of both parents to support their children after separation would be at its heart."

Research shows one in four three-year-olds overweight or obese
Almost one child in four is either overweight or obese at age three, a UK-wide survey has found. The study, the biggest-ever of its kind, measured the height and weight of 14,000 children aged three. Preliminary results reveal that 18 per cent were overweight and a further 5 per cent obese. The research was carried out using data from the Millennium Cohort Study, which is tracking children born in the UK between 2000 and 2002.

Guidelines for health professionals on forced marriage
The Government has launched new guidelines to assist health professionals who suspect cases of forced marriage. Aimed at frontline practitioners such as GPs, school nurses, midwives, and A&E staff, the guidelines provide advice on how to recognise the warning signs, and what to do if a patient discloses that they have been, or are about to be, forced to marry.
