New proposals from IPPR to improve pupil well-being

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has unveiled new proposals to enhance pupil well-being. The proposals include calling for a school counsellor in every secondary school to work with parent support advisers and school nurses to help pupils through the challenges they face.

Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill

The House of Commons debated on removing the caveat 'the need of that child for a father' for women seeking IVF. The move to change to the statement 'supporting parenting' was passed by 292 votes to 217. MPs also rejected moves to cut the current abortion limit to 22 weeks which will therefore remain at the 24 weeks limit.

New poll on marriage from Civitas / Ipsos Mori

Civitas and Ipsos Mori have published a new poll of over 1,500 young people finding that the majority want to get married. Of the sample 8 in 10 cohabiting couples said they did want to get married.

First meeting of the Ministerial Working Group to tackle child poverty

The Ministerial Working Group tackling child poverty have met with Work and Pension's Minister, Stephen Timms and Minister for Children, Young People and Families, Beverley Huges. The Working Group will be looking at, in particular child poverty in London where the child poverty rate remains at 35%, above the national average of 22%.

11th - 17th May 2008 is National Breastfeeding Awareness Week and as part of the week the Department of Health is encouraging young mothers from low-income backgrounds to access support that will help them to breastfeed for longer.

New research from the ESRC on divorce and elderly care

New research from the Economic and Social Research Council has found that elderly parents are cared for by their children regardless of the marital status. The research showed that "British adult children help their elderly parents according to current need rather than past behaviour".

FPA (Family Planning Association) has been working with the BBC to produce a new website for parents on the Bare Facts. FPA produced the ten questions on the common things parents ask about when discussing sex and relationships with children and young people.
