Funds from the DfES to assist parental involvement in their children's learning

Funds are to be targeted at a selection of local authorities in disadvantaged areas, to help parents get involved in their children’s early learning.The £9m funding has been made available to 41 local authorities who work with some of the most disadvantaged and hard to reach parents. They are using the funds to develop ideas on how to connect with these parents and help them to help their children.

Fall in teenage pregnancy rates

The latest quarterly teenage pregnancy statistics show that for the first quarter of 2006 the under-16 rate of conceptions was 7.0 per 1000 girls aged 13-15, compared with 7.6 for the same quarter 2005.

New survey from the NSPCC

Insight into violence towards children has come from a new NSPCC survey carried out by GfK NOP. 1172 boys and girls aged 11-16 were asked about violence in their lives. More than four out of five (81%) said violence is 'a major problem for young people nowadays', with two in five seeing it as simply 'part of growing up'.

£340 million to improve the lives of disabled children

A package of policies to support disabled children and their families has been announced by Economic Secretary Ed Balls and Education Minister Lord Adonis, as they published the report Aiming High for Disabled Children: Better Support for Families. Supporting victims of forced marriage

Survivors of forced marriage are being offered help to start a new life with the launch of a new support network and handbook. The Government's forced marriage unit deals with around 5,000 inquiries and helps rescue up to 300 women, children and men who are trapped in abusive, forced marriages every year. The new handbook for survivors offers practical help and information to help survivors take control of their lives. A survivors' network is also being launched in partnership with Karma Nirvana, a forced marriage NGO, which will provide long term emotional support.

Research shows "unselfishness is all relative"

Psychologists have found evidence for the first time that people are more willing to bear physical pain to help another person if they are closely biologically related to that person. Elainie Madsen of the University of St. Andrews, along with colleagues from five institutions, has worked on a research project, started 20 years ago, investigating if altruism has a biological basis. The group’s work has been published in the British Journal of Psychology.
