DCSF announces intention to make PSHE compulsory
Ed Balls has confirmed his intention to make Personal Social Health and Economic Education a compulsory part of the curriculum in both primary and secondary schools in line with Sir Alasdair Macdonald's recommendations.

Family courts hearings to be open to the media
From the 27th April family court proceedings will be open to the media. Courts will still be able to restrict attendance if, for example, the welfare of the child requires it, or for the safety and protection of parties or witnesses.

Publication of the review of PSHE
The Department for Children, Schools and Families has published the Independent review of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (statutory) Education. The review provides recommendations to the DCSF to consider on the curriculum.

New Government programme to bring older and younger generations together
The Government has launched a £5.5 million programme to bring older and younger generations together. The money will fund 12 intergenerational projects across the country where young and older people can engage with each other.

New survey from the Mental Health Foundation finds multiple births could trigger depression
A new survey published by the Mental Health Foundation has found that mothers of twins or triplets could be more likely to suffer postnatal depression than other new mums. The survey of more than 1,000 mothers who had a multiple birth found 17% had experienced post-natal depression, whilst according to the Royal College of Psychiatrists around 1 in 10 mothers will develop postnatal depression.

National Statitsics publishes Social Trends 39
The Office for National Statistics has published Social Trends 39. The report shows that there has been in increase in the number of men and women aged between 20 and 34 living with their parents. Now a third of men in the age group and a fifth of women are living with their parents.

New study finds a good relationship with the mother-in-law is vital to a happy arranged marriage
A new study, presented at the British Psychological Association Annual Conference in Brighton, shows that factors that make a happy marriage are the same for arranged marriage as for choice ones - and a good relationship with the mother-in-law is vital.

New survey from 4Children finds life is getting harder for families in Britain
A new survey of over 2,000 adults by 4Children, has found that 50% of Britons feel that family life is harder that it was 20 years ago. The survey also found that 49% of Britons only see extended family members (including gradparents) twice a year or less.
