New academy for parenting practitioners

Beverley Hughes, Minister for Children, Young People and Families has announced that the new National Academy for Parenting Practitioners will be provided by the Family and Parenting Institute, Parenting UK and King's College London from this October.

Caring for children research from AIFS

New research published by the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) reveals that children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who are looked after by a carer from a different cultural background may encounter confusing or conflicting responses when in day care.

New support for Commissioners of children's services

Care Services Minister, Ivan Lewis, presented a new self-assessment tool for commissioners of children's and young people's health services, today. The new CD-Rom will allow commissioners, such as Primary Care Trusts, to asses their capability to deliver child and family focused services.

Next steps for children in care

Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Education and Skills, has announced that the government will publish a white paper later in the year to take forward its ambitious plans for children in care. The announcement was made as the Department for Education and Skills published the response to the government's consultation on the green paper Care Matters: Transforming the Lives of Children in Care.

ESRC study on homework and keeping children, parents and teachers together

A new interactive learning system which helps parents keep in touch with what their children are doing at school is proving to be a great success with children, parents and teachers, according to new research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. The research, based at the University of Sussex and the London Knowledge Lab, developed the 'HOMEWORK' interactive learning system which enables children between the ages of 5 and 7 to learn and practice Key Stage 1 maths using a range of multimedia technologies - both in the classroom and at home with their family.

Health visitors are overwhelmingly popular and trusted by parents - yet parents face a post code lottery when it comes to accessing help from their health visitor, according to new evidence from the Family and Parenting Institute and a YouGov poll of parents with children under five.

National Statistics has released the 37th edition of Social Trends. Among other things the publication notes that the "proportion of children living in lone-parent families in Great Britain more than tripled between 1972 and spring 2006 to 24 per cent".

New maternity strategy
