Equality and Human Rights Commission calls for change in parental leave
The Equality and Human Rights Commission has launched proposals for a fundamental change in parental leave. The changes will help to increase take up of the present provisions by those currently missing out - mainly fathers and lower income parents.

Flexible working rights for extra 4.5 million

New research finds romantic love can last
New research published in the Review of General Psychology has found that romance doesn't necessarily decline or disappear in long-term relationships but can last a lifetime. The researchers looked at 25 studies looking at both short and long-term relationships to find out if romantic love is associated with more satisfaction. The review found that those who reported greater romantic love were more satisfied were more satisfied in short and long-term relationships.

Poll of young people with mental health problems finds lack of support
A new poll by YoungMinds of young people with mental health problems has found that three quarters were offered no support when waiting for treatment. YoungMinds surveyed 100 young people with serious mental health conditions.

Government announces an extension of the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Pilot
The Home Office has announced that they will extend Child Sexual Offender Disclosure Pilot to Cleveland, Cambridgeshire and Hampshire. Under the pilot, a parent, carer or guardian can request that an individual who has access to their child or children is checked out for a record of child sexual offences.

Home Office consultation to tackle violence against women and girls
Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, has launched a cross-Government consultation to tackle violence against women and girls. An Ipsos Mori poll conducted on behalf of the Home Office found that one third of respondents know a woman who has been the victim of violence by a man she knows and over two in five respondents believe that a woman should be help partly of fully responsible for being sexually attacked if she was flirting heavily with the man.

DWP publishes new research on attitudes of non-working parents
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has published new research on the attitudes and behaviours of non-working partnered parents living in low-income households. The research explores the factors that influence decisions about work within their households. Findings included that the non-working partner spent a considerable amount of time carrying out domestic chores and caring for their children.

New survey on the impact of the economic downturn on women
The Equalities Office has published new findings on the impact of the economic downturn on women and families. Findings include that eight out of ten women are concerned about the impact of the downturn on family life and that more than a third of women reported that the downturn had already reduced their quality of life.

Statistics from National Statistics on women in the labour market
National Statistics has used recently published statistics to look at how the economic downturn is affecting women's employment. The downturn in 2008 has impacted less on women in employment than men. The employment rate for women in the three months before December 2008 was down 0.3% compared to the previous year but down 1% for men.

£20.5 million for promoting contraception
The Government has announced an extra £20.5 million to help young people get better access to contraception and raising awareness of the risks of unprotected sex. The money will be used to support the teenage pregnancy strategy.
