Baby names 2005. Jessica pushes Emily off the top spot

Jack and Jessica are the most popular names given to babies in England and Wales in 2005. Jack has been the top name for baby boys for 11 years while Jessica moves up two places to become the new girls' number one.

Civil partnerships here in time for Christmas

Hundreds of same-sex couples up and down the country will be celebrating today as they get legal recognition for their relationships for the first time. Ceremonies will be taking place across the UK as couples form the first civil partnerships in England and Wales - closely following those in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Family Procedure (Adoption) rules published

TSO have published the new Family Procedure (Adoption) Rules. These rules support the Adoption and Children Act (2002), which comprehensively modernised the whole existing legal framework for domestic and inter-country adoption.

National Family & Parenting Institute calls for set income standards for families with children

Children have a right to at least a basic standard of material wellbeing. The ill effects of poverty harm their future development. The government should establish a permanent independent income standards body, recommending a minimum income for every family that allows children an equal start in life, says a new policy paper from the National Family & Parenting Institute (NFPI).

Joan Hunt and Ceridwen Roberts from the Department of Social Policy and Social Work at the University of Oxford have produced a briefing paper to facilitate a more informed and evidence based approach to learning from other jurisdictions. The paper is based on a study funded by the Nuffield Foundation which examined the processes applied in other countries.

Children's Minister Beverley Hughes today confirmed how the Government would implement an important Lord Laming recommendation for improving children's welfare and wellbeing, while ensuring strong safeguards on access to information about children.
