Government plans to increase support for at risk families and tackle youth crime

Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children Schools and Families, has revealed that £22million will be invested into Family Intervention Projects, with the intention of ensuring that more support is provided by local authorities to vulnerable families. Through the implementation of such projects it is also hoped that cases of anti-social behaviour will be reduced.

LGA plans for the future of child protection

New improvements to the protection of vulnerable children by councils look likely, following a Local Government Association summit on child protection. This summit was attended by a number of different organisations, including charities, council leaders as well as the Directors of Children's Services, and addressed short, medium and long-term plans for the future of child protection.

Charity warns that new work requirements for single parents could undermine good parenting

National Charity 'Single Parent Families' has warned that new welfare reforms requiring single parents to look for jobs could lead to many parents 'cycling between low paid work and benefits', and could ultimately undermine good parenting.

Reduction of HIV cases following universal voluntary testing and immediate treatment

New research by the World Health Organisation, (WHO) conducted using a mathematical model developed by HIV specialists, has revealed that the number of new HIV cases could be reduced by 95% within the next 10 years. According to the research, such a reduction could be accomplished by using universal and annual voluntary testing, immediately followed by antiretroviral therapy treatment (ART). The transmission of HIV from mother to child could also be reduced using the same method.

More choice for lone parents to help them find the right job

In a bid to eradicate child poverty by 2020, the Government has announced changes to benefit rules, meaning that lone parents of children over 12 are no longer eligible to claim income support solely on the basis of being a lone parent. Such parents will now have to claim Jobseeker's Allowance instead, whilst those who are too ill to work will be able to claim an Employment and Support Allowance instead.

New American research suggests restrictions against same-sex civil partenerships can lead to increased stress and anxiety.

New research conducted by the American Psychological Association has indicated that restrictions against civil marriages between same-sex couples can lead to higher stress and anxiety levels amongst gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender adults, and also amongst their families.

Home Office introduces new rules to protect exploited women

The Home Office is introducing new measures to protect women who have been forced into prostitution and those held against their will. The change in the law will make sex buyers liable for prosecution even if they did not know that the prostitute was controlled by a pimp or had been trafficked.

The Centre for Social Justice publishes Family Law Review

The think-tank set up by former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith, The Centre for Social Justice, has published a review of family law. Proposals in the review include making pre-nuptial agreements legally binding, backing for marriage education classes and reviewing divorce procedures.

National Statistics has published the 2008 Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings. The survey has found an increase in the gender pay gap up 0.3% to 12.8%.

New project from fpa working with homeless young people

fpa are working with Centrepoint and health service providers to promote sexual health choices for homeless young people in the North East and London. The project will increase and improve young people's knowledge of sexual health and to encourage the use of sexual health services.

Parents struggle as a result of credit crunch

A You Gov survey for the Family and Parenting Institute has revealed that the credit crunch is severely impacting on parents' finances, finding that three quarters of mums and dads have debts in the shape of credit cards, loans and overdrafts.
