Research from St Mungo's on homelessness and relationships

St Mungo's homelessness charity has released research highlighting relationship breakdown as a major cause of homelessness in the UK. 41% of those surveyed said that relationship breakdown had led to their homelessess.

New research from JRF on the impact of poverty on children's school experience

A new study from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) examines the extent to which poverty impacts upon the experience of school life amongst young children. The study found that "poorer children accepted that they were not going to get the same qaulity of schooling, or the same outcomes, as better off children".

DCSF announce support for families with troubled children

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has announced increased support for families with children at risk of being taken into care or custody. A new pilot project will provide intensive support for families from trained professionals with the intention of helping those families stay together.

ESRC research on children's peer groups

The Economic and Social Research Council has published new research on childhood prejudice and the treatment of peers within their own and different groups. The research was conducted with more that 800 children aged between 5 and twelve.

Ed Balls outlines new Children's Plan

Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families has outlined in a speech to the Association of Directors of Children's Services and the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services the Government's new Children's Plan to be published in December.

Beverley Hughes announces extension of early years services

Beverley Hughes, Children's Minister, has announced a £340 million cash boost to extend free nursery education for three and four olds. The funding will increase the entitlement to free education from 12.5 to 15 hours per week.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) have created a new team to tackle UK child poverty. The team will be co-ordinating and developing policy with HM Treasury.
