National survey of parents and children

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has published a survey of parents and children. Key findings included 'three in ten children aged 14-19 felt they had no or little control over their future, this feeling heightened among children born to younger mothers and living in lone parent families'.

New research published in the Annals of the New York Academy by Professor James Heckman discusses the 'ability gap' between children of different means. The article discusses whether children from low income families begin with disadvantage that puts them further behind more affluent counterparts as the grow up.

National Statistics publish new research on emotional development and wellbeing of children

National Statistics has published new research entitled Three years on: A survey of the emotional development and wellbeing of children and young people. The study found that children who experience three of more stressful life events, such as bereavement, divorce or illness are more likely to develop emotional and behavioural disorders.

Survey results from FPI on top issues for parents

The Family and Parenting Institute have published new figures about the issues parents ould like to raise with the government. The findings show that 67% of parents want to tell Government what will work for them on benefits and tax credits.

More funding for families with children with additional needs

Ed Balls, Children's Secretary, has announced a package of measures to empower parents with children with special educational needs and disabilities. The funding is part of the Aiming High For Disabled Children Programme.

New survey from the Centre for Separated Families

The Centre for Separated Families commissioned a survey of 1,000 children under 15 years-of-age entitled Happiness, hopes and wellbeing. The survey found, among other things, that young people who had seen their parents break up were more likely not to want children of their own in the future.

New longitudinal study launched by the ESRC

New research shows effectiveness of parent training programmes

New research conducted by Janine Dretzke and her colleagues including Jane Barlow have found that parent training has a consistently positive impact up to four months after training. The research was commissioned by NICE the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence.
