The Ministry of Defence has published the UK armed forces families survey. The survey found that for all three Services the impact of service on family life remains a problem.

New research from The Equality and Human Rights Commission

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has published two new papers using Millennium Cohort Study data. The papers are entitled Mothers and the modern family and Ethnicity and patterns of employment and care.

UK population to rise according to National Statistics

The UK population is set to rise to 65 million over the next ten years according to National Statistics. Fertility, life expectancy and migration are also rising.

Report of the review of Section 58 of the Children Act

The review of Section 58 of the 2004 Children Act has been published. Section 58 removed the availability of the defence of 'reasonable punishment' from parents charged with assault, inflicting wounding or grievous bodily harm or causing cruelty to a child.

Fragile Families research on mother's residential mobility

The Fragile Families research programme has published new research examining how often mothers move within the first three years of their child's life. The findings show that of the sample (approximately 5,000 parents and their children) one-third were residentially stable for that period.

New figures on child poverty from the DWP

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has produced new statistics showing that fewer children are living in poverty. There has also been a fall in the number of children living in homes that fail to meet the set standard of decency.

New research undertaken for the Department of Work and Pensions has found that child disability has a negative effect on paid work for both lone parents and couple mothers.

Parentline Plus online poll on the effect of current news stories on children

Parentline Plus has conducted an online poll of 200 parents asking whether recent news stories, such as the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and the continued threat of terrorism, had an effect on their children. 71% said their children had been affected.

DCSF launches Youth Taskforce

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has launched a new Youth Taskforce which will form part of the Government's strategy for young people as set out in Aiming High for Young People. The project includes £18 million to sustain 53 Family Intervention Projects.

JFR publishes report on lone parents and 'mini-jobs'

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has published a report entitled Lone parents working under 16 hours a week ('mini-jobs'). The report explores whether encouraging lone parents to work in jobs of less that 16 hours a week could increase the employment rate of lone parents and tackle high rates of poverty.

Increase in the number of cohabiting couple families - new report from National Statistics

National Statistics has published a new report, Focus on Families, 2007 edition, which shows that the number of cohabiting couples families in the UK has increased between 1996 and 2006 from 1.4 million to 2.3 million.
