More women obtaining 'morning after pill' from pharmacies
National Statistics have released the results of a survey for the Department of Health carried out in 2004/05. Questions on contraceptive use and sexual health were asked of women aged under 50 and men aged under 70.

97% of 25-34 year olds believe living alone before settling down is important
A new report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), Unilever Family Report 2005 - Home Alone?, reveals that many young people actively seek the independence associated with solo living and that living alone affects men and women differently. The report is based on a survey of more than 1,000 people who live alone.

Move towards greater openness in family courts
New court rules on disclosure of information in family court cases involving children come into effect on Monday 31 October. Families will be able to discuss sensitive issues more easily with advice centre staff, health care professionals and counselling services.

Parents want local support from the time a baby is born
Poll results from the National Family & Parenting Institute, produced for Parents' Week 2005, reveal that parents believe that support should primarily come from other parents through informal groups and networks. Those who had used Sure Start local groups said they had positively transformed the experience of early parenthood.

New directions for CAFCASS
The Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) has launched a consultation paper - Every Day Matters: New Directions for CAFCASS - setting out proposals for a new way of working with a focus on early and intensive interventions, for the benefit of children involved in family court applications. Responses to the consultation should be sent by Tuesday 31 January 2006.

Work and Families Bill
The Work and Families Bill was introduced in the House of Commons today. The Bill provides statutory rights to leave and pay in connection with the birth or adoption of children. Extension of maternity and adoption pay period, and additional paternity leave and pay are addressed.

Domestic violence, safety and family proceedings
A review undertaken by HM Inspectorate of Court Administration (HMICA) of how domestic violence issues are addressed by the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) and administered within the family courts in Her Majesty's Courts Service (HMCS) has been published.

Men and women found more similar than portrayed in popular media, according to research on gender differences
New research exploring gender differences led by Hanet S. Hyde, Phd, of the Univsersity of Wisconsin, has been published in the current issue of American Psychologist. Contrary to popular media portayals of men and women as psychoogically different and as two planets- Mars and Venus- this review of 46 met-analysis conducted over the last 20 years claims that males and females from childhood to adulthood are more alike than different on most but not all psychological variables.

Angry Harry and the fight for masculinity

Teenagers pick emergency contraception over parenthood
Despite problems anticipated with accessing emergency contraception, youngsters would still use it because they see greater problems associated with being a teenage parent. This is the conclusion of Julie Bayley and Professor Louise Wallace of the Health Services Research Centre, Coventry University. They will present their findings at the British Psychological Society's Division of Health Psychology Annual Conference held at Coventry University.

Relationships: the vitamins of life
According to Constantine Sedikides, the latest winner of the British Psychological Society's Michael Argyle Lecture, close relationships are like vitamins, because they help combat life's ills. In his article in the August edition of The Psychologist, the award winning psychologist looks at why close relatioships boost well-being and argues that while vitamins help fight off illness, close relationships help fight off life adversities.
