Divorce statistics for 2008

The Office for National Statistics has published the divorce figures for 2008. The number of divorces fell by 5% in 2008 to 121,779.

British Social Attitudes survey published

The 26th report of the British Social Attitudes survey has been published. Findings include 45%  agree that it 'makes no difference to children whether their parents are married to each other or just living together', up from 38% in 1998.

The Children's Society publishes statistics on family conflict

The Children's Society has published research on family conflict. Findings included that young people who felt that their family got along well together had much higher than average levels of well-being than those who did not, irrespective of family structure.

Figures show schools managing budgets better

New figures have shown that school surplus balances have fallen for the first time since 2002/03 to £1.9 billion. Schools Minister, Vernon Coaker stated the majority of schools are managing their budgets well and that the number of schools with excess surplus balances has fallen to its lowest level in these ten years to just over 7,000 schools.

Free laptops and broadband for 270,000 families

The Prime Minister and Ed Balls has announced a ground-breaking scheme to give 270,000 low income families a free computer and free broadband access, under a major drive to close the digital and educational divide between the rich and poor and help parents keep in touch with their child's progress.

Children missing out on maintenance

According to a new survey, children could be missing out asmany parents don’t know how to arrange child maintenance after separation. In a poll carried out on 900 parents who were separated and who have children aged 18 or below, 93% believe they as parents still have a financial responsibility to their kids even if they don’t live with them.

Schools Secretary announces children to learn about money matters

Schools Secretary Ed Balls and money expert Martin Lewis have stressed the importance of children being able to learn about money matters at school, as part of the new compulsory PSHE curriculum, all pupils from the age of 5 to 16 will be taught about handling money, savings and the financial skills they need as adults.

Government announces extra help with childcare for disabled children

Ed Balls and Dawn Primarolo have announced that parents with disabled children will receive extra support in helping with child care, following a cash boost of £12.5 million from the government.

New 3 RS guarantee and support for pupils falling behind in school

Gordon Brown and Ed Balls have announced a new guarantee for pupils in Key Stage 1. This guarantee which is due to come into effect September 2011, reports that if a 6-7 years old child is falling behind in their studies, the school will alert the parents and advise them on what they could do to help and if they school could provide any further additional help.
