New National Statistics

UK population to rise by 7m by 2031. The population is projected to grow until 2031. This is due to natural increase (more births than deaths) and because it is assumed there will be more immigrants than emigrants (a net inward flow of migrants).

New National Statistics

Employment rate for lone parents was 55.5 per cent, up 0.1 percentage points from the previous year and up 5.3 percentage points from five years earlier. In comparison, the employment rate for married and cohabiting mothers was 71.4 per cent, up 0.4 percentage points from the previous year and up 0.2 percentage points from five years earlier.

NHS services are half way through a 10 year plan to become more responsive to patient needs and prevent ill health by the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Voluntary approach to equal pay reviews is failing

After four years of promotion, just one third of large organisations have completed an equal pay review, according to new research published today by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC). The EOC is calling for a new approach to close the pay gap between men and women. A Working Paper series entitled Equal Pay Reviews 2005 is available to download.

New study reveals levels of poverty in Britain

Launched at the House of Lords today, a new survey - Poverty and Social Exclusion in Britain: The Millennium Survey - shows that three million adults and 400,000 children are not properly fed by today's standards, a quarter of British adults are poor, and one third of children are forced to go without at least one of the things they need, such as three meals a day, toys, out of school activities or adequate clothing.

It's tough at the top for high-flying British women

Women in Britain are happier with 'non-traditional' domestic arrangements, according to new Economic and Social Research Council funded research at City University. 'Our findings contradict Neo-Conservative claims that women would be happier if they went back to being traditional housewives,' says Professor Rosemary Crompton, who led the research. 'The recipe for personal happiness, satisfaction with the family and lower stress at home seems to be a combination of liberal attitudes to work outside the home and a fairer division of household chores.'

National parents programme rolls into south Wales

National sexual health charity fpa announced today that it has secured funding for its Speakeasy programme to run in Wales. This means that for the first time Welsh parents will be able to attend Speakeasy courses to equip them with the information and skills they need to talk to their children about sex and relationships.

Research published today by the Department for Work and Pensions sets out findings from research which investigates how and when differences in work behaviour between men and women develop. It focuses on the evolution of gender gaps immediately after childbirth and during the initial years of family development.

Cameron: Tackling poverty in Britain today

In his speech in the Centre for Social Justice, Conservative party leader, provided more details of his commission for social justice, headed by former leader Iain Duncan Smith MP. Four working groups will deal with the areas of family, economics, education, and freedom from addiction. Mr Cameron stated that "The first working group will look at the home and family. More and more evidence shows that family breakdown causes poverty and poverty causes family breakdown".

Fathers-4-Justice group disbanded after kidnap allegations

F4J leader Matt O'Connor announced last night that he was suspending the operations of the group pending enquiries into allegations contained on the cover of this mornings Sun Newspaper that 'extremist sympathisers' associated with the group had planned to kidnap the Prime Minister's Son, Leo Blair.

Higher social groups report best health

In the 2001 Census, 40 million out of the 59 million people living in the UK rated their general health in the last year as 'good', a further 13 million rated it as 'fairly good', while 6 million people rated their health as 'not good'. Children (aged 0 to 15) had the highest rate of good general health at over 90 per cent, with an additional 8 per cent rating their general health as fairly good.

New campaign to keep children safe online

The Home Office has has launched a £1 million awareness campaign to make parents and children aware of the dangers posed by online paedophiles. The campaign will feature adverts specifically targeted at teenagers through the internet and radio, designed to make them think twice about giving out personal details to people they meet online. It will include newspaper, magazine and radio adverts, which will run over the next 6 weeks.

Plans for new National Parenting Academy

The Government's new Action Plan will include a focus on the most problematic families coupled with a much wider extension of parenting classes to ensure parents get the help they need to fulfil their responsibilities in bringing up their children. This will be backed up by the creation of a new National Parenting Academy for professionals working with children and families.

Respect Action Plan

Police and local authorities will have tough new powers to deal with families who blight communities with unacceptable behaviour, according to the Government's Respect Action Plan published today. The Action Plan includes new funding of up to £28 million to set up the network of intensive family support schemes and provide parenting help.

Parent empowerment prevents youth crime

Parents are being trained to reduce the likelihood that their children’s bad behaviour will turn into youth crime. The West Sussex Youth Offending Team and West Sussex Educational Psychology Service have trained sessional workers - many of whom have had their own difficulties with their kids - to work with parents to identify what it is going on in the home and what they can do to make things better.
